Abstract

At the NE angle of the Palace of the Partal Alto in the Alhambra, Mu?ammad II opened up an outer gate in the last third of the 13th century, leading towards the Albayzín and directly to the Generalife almunia, which was called b?b al-Fara? or the Puerta del Consuelo (Gate of Consolation). This gate was enlarged in the 14th century in order to strengthen its defence. After the arrival of the Catholic Monarchs, this area was fortified with an artillery bastion, as happened in most of the great gates of the medina. This gate had been forgotten until the second half of the 20th century when it was rediscovered by archaeology.
